One of the challenges of doing a retro revisit is that with songs like this I have to attempt to give my real time reaction vs what I think in this moment.
I haven’t spoken about the 2 prior Aubrey tracks and I am unlikely to except in passing as related to the other songs of the battle. Why? I simply don’t give a damn. I am not here to pretend that I am unbiased. I am here to give a version from my POV and I am not here for Aubrey defense.
Euphoria dropped on 04/30 – this track dropped on 05/03.
May 3 is the day that our current version of Hip Hop was altered and might just be the most memorable day in Hip Hop in her history.
In the days since Euphoria the Internets were ablaze with breakdowns and deep dives and conspiracy theories. What did this line mean? Who did/say…..
The rabbit hole Kendrick would eventually mention was deep and I was inside it all the way. It was in the time between that I learned about the decade long cold war. I learned about the subs on subs on subs. I began to have a new respect for Kendrick and began to enjoy the dismantling of Aubrey, It was fun being interested and invested in rap again. It was a while.
I fell for some of less than great takes. I ain’t mad though, it was fun.
I did not catch 616 in real time. I caught the news off Twitter and I had no idea what was going on. I understood it was a back 2 back moment and applauded but the complexity of it all I frankly still unpacking.
This line though: Can’t Toosie Slide up outta this one, it’s just gon’ resurface
Every dog gotta have its day, now live in your purpose
oooof
What I thought then was shit was real, He was explaining to this kid that he was coming for his head top and there would be no escape.
When I wrap this up I have a few insights I’ve come to AFTER but in the moment I felt for Drake (TM).
I don’t any longer but I inherently understood that it was going to be bad. I didn’t know and I think few besides PGLang just how bad it would become.
