I considered taking this to the YT page, and that might still occur but for now let’s chat about the song which changed hip hop….hooray.
I didn’t realize that Kendrick v Drake was a thing. I enjoyed Kendrick even if I didn’t listen to him as often as I do today. In my defense the person who introduced me to Kendrick was Andrea and well almost everything attached to that person is ugly to me. The genius of Kendrick pushes through though, and this last year well I’m the #1 fan.
I found out that the disrespect was real via Twitter. No I will not call it X.
I was scrolling through the timeline while avoiding doing actual work and this was all the conversation:
I hadn’t heard any Kendrick for a while so I thought why not? Frankly I was not ready.
I could break it down line by line as other reactors have, but those with more hip hop cache than I have said it better. What I will say is that every 8 bars or so I went jesus and this track is over 6 minutes long.
I realized after listen #1 that Kendrick really don’t like Aubrey. I realized in the days after how long the beef has been a thing. I became consumed with all the deep takes and nuggets of info dropped. I found reaction channels and rediscovered others. I went to places like Reddit to find more theories and more info. I was hooked.
I was also wildly entertained by the public’s reaction. First, I had no idea people actually fucked with Aubrey like they do/did. I was not a ‘hater’ but I understood that I was not his main audience and let him live. I have a couple of his songs on my phone but I tend to like his collabs or remakes of his songs by other artists. Apparently there is a whole world out there who think he is good. Amazed. The thing which fascinated me the most though was that the public in general apparently was waiting for just this moment. Listening to Euphoria sent me back to Tailor Made and Push Ups. Those songs reminded me that I am not a Drake (TM) fan. I didn’t realize what was about to happen. Short of possibly Kendrick I don’t know who could have seen what was about to happen. I think if Kendrick was being honest not even he saw this drop in this exact manner.
April 30 and May 1 was a whirlwind of who was better. Apparently it was a debate back then? Going back to YT the idea that Aubrey was ‘up’ and had a chance was real:
That was an odd time in my life. Within 2 weeks I would go through the worst health crisis in my 1/2 century on this planet. It was the ongoing battle week and the aftermath of it which helped keep me sane when I could not breathe. One might say I got a lil obsessed.
For this girl it was all a wrap after Euphoria. By the time we got to minute 5 and Lamar said ‘can I bleed him-bet’, I understood that there wasn’t a person active in music ready for what that boy from Compton had in him. In the aftermath it is odd having so many others see what I’ve seen for quite some time- Kendrick is a nigga from Compton. Seeing yt America and others realize he is not Pultizer Prize Kenny he is Kenny who won the Pulitizer. It is annoying for women to realize he’s sexy. It is baffling watching some try to rewrite history I lived through and proclaim Drake (TM) did not lose. I mean…I guess. It is anger inducing to watch Aubrey sue UMG while still remaining pussy about Kendrick.
It was a great year in hip hop and I am celebrating the anniversary instead of a different one that happened a couple years ago around this time.
I still want to be like Kendrick when I grow up.
