Its been a few days since I released anything here – I have some quality blogs in the pipeline, but I thought that today I would just talk about some current events and shit.

The State of the Union:

I still love politics, I just don’t know if I am troubled, excited, confused or just overwhelmed by the race to the White House 2012.

First all of the fun candidates are gone from the Republican field…Michele Bachman – Herman Cain – Rick Perry gone gone and gone.  The debates are just not the same without Rick looking drunk, Michele looking like an alien, and Herm being Herm.

Let’s be real, all of this candidate search on the Republican side is pretty pointless no matter who the other side puts up the President is going to run on his record and the ever so slowly recovering economy.  I still have not seen the candidate emerge who is going to beat Obama handily, I mean if you have please share…  This primary season is pure comedy, and I am angry that the comedy is leaving and I am stuck with Newt and company.

While I am mentioning Newt:

I love watching Newt perform.  I do not doubt his intelligence, I just enjoy that idiotic shit comes out of his mouth and within that moment Newt will attempt to talk you into believing him.  Newt will say something that makes no sense like: We can replace one school janitor with 30 middle school students.  When the reporter reminds Newt that the idea is preposterous?  He doubles down and refuses to admit that he was wrong.  Sure he’s been known to alter his position later but in that moment Newt with all the conviction in the world will try to sell that bad idea.

I am not all that mad at Newt though, at least I am not if what his ex wife Marianne says is true.  Marianne will be on Nightline possibly tonight, explaining to the world that her husband wanted an open marriage. Let’s discuss:

After the former Mrs Newt dropped the O bomb I took a question to Facebook:

Is an open marriage a real marriage or is Newt’s wife wrong.  Two people responded publicly – more than two hit my mailbox with some interesting points of view.

One responder was on board with an open marriage being a marriage.  Another tossed Ephesians 4:1 at me do explain why an open marriage was not a marriage.  We went in to a discussion about how marriage is so much more than sex – yet when I mentioned that you can have all of those other qualities in a marriage that are important and still have sex with other people the response was: then you should not get married.

It can’t be both.  You can’t say that sex is not the important part of a marriage, and then say you can’t be married if you have sex with other people.

If the commitment, and the love, and the provisions, and the recognition, and the trust, and the investment, and the estate, and the connection are what a marriage is about:  then you can still have all of that with your spouse and still fuck the cable guy.  Conversely, you can’t declare that marriage is about monogamy without discounting all of the other factors that enter into why you choose a spouse.

At the end of the day, we need to start a dialogue about adult relationships and how to make them work better.

From the CDC in 2009:

Marriage and Divorce

(Data are for the U.S.)

  • Number of marriages: 2,077,000
  • Marriage rate: 6.8 per 1,000 total population
  • Divorce rate: 3.4 per 1,000 population (44 reporting States and D.C.)

Those numbers indicate that 50% of marriages end in divorce.

If marriage is the sacred covenant that the social conservative right wants us to view it as, then we need to figure out how to help couples stay married.   Does it mean redefining marriage?  Not exactly.

I strongly feel that marriage should be open to any two individuals that want to be married, but I am going to restrict this conversation to heterosexual man & woman unions.

When you say I do there is a 50% chance that you will end up saying I don’t any more.

Yet we refuse to budge from the concept that forsaking all others ONLY means monogamy.

Forsaking all others means never putting anyone else above your spouse.  It means honoring the commitment that you made with your spouse based on experience, honesty, love and trust.  If that commitment includes sex with other people, then you are no less married.  Free your mind.

And while we are speaking about less thans:

The movie Red Tails opens nation wide today.  The synopsis from IMDB.com:
A crew of African American pilots in the Tuskegee training program, having faced segregation while kept mostly on the ground during World War II, are called into duty under the guidance of Col. A.J. Bullard.

Let’s dismiss an urban legend first – the Tuskegee Airmen do not have the perfect record that we’ve been told in the past.  While they successfully escorted on countless missions, they were not perfect.

This movie appears to be less than perfect as well.

I am the least militant Black woman that I know.  I do understand though the importance of supporting my people – when they’ve earned my support.

ixnay on the support bad Black films because they are Black.

I will not.

My movie is just as valuable as anyone else’s and my time is more precious to me than yours.

If you are like me?  And you have to dress an Autistic 11 year old, a disabled 75 year old, haul a wheelchair and make sure everyone is wearing pull ups before you head out to the movie theater?  You need to make it worth my while, and the reviews of Red Tails give me no incentive to move my ass.

The story of the Tuskegee Airmen is one that deserves to be told with honor and dignity.  I appreciate Lucas Films for delivering quality CGI and extend a big old fuck you for the rest of it.

The story to be told is one of how these Black men fought the odds to enter into a training program at all in the segregated South, and their desire to be the best at what they did despite the obstacles placed in front of them.

The story to be told is how these men earned the respect of their peers in the trenches, and came home to Black only water fountains.

The story to be told deserves better actors than Terrence Howard.

The story needs not be sold that the White men contemporaries to the Tuskegee Airmen were not incompetent, they were not.  You don’t need to make the White folk look stupid to make the Black folk look ordinary.  You don’t need to make the White folk look stupid to understand that it was WWII and  we were in the middle of a war that exhausted resources, including human capital, and that these men were called on because they were needed and capable not that all the other White folk were gone.

You don’t get to guilt me into seeing a movie with Black people in it, because there are few Black people in movies.

You don’t get more Black movies by continuing to produce drivel for the masses to consume.  You get more Black movies by making good Black movies.  Red Tails does not appear to be it, so let’s get to doing the right thing, and make something good.
